Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause

Menopause is a phase in a women’s life characterized by the cessation of menses. It is associated with a deficiency of the hormone estrogen which maintains the vaginal wall thickness, lubrication and vulval health.

Some women may experience these symptoms a few years before menopause while a few may experience it much later.

The symptoms include:

  1. Feeling of vaginal dryness.
  2. Pain and inadequate lubrication while having intercourse.
  3. Vaginal spotting with intercourse.
  4. Vaginal burning.
  5. Burning sensation / pain while passing urine.
  6. Recurrent urinary tract infections.
  7. Urinary frequency.
  8. Urinary incontince.

Hormonal deficiency may cause sexual dysfunction due to the associated pain and discomfort.

Dry vagina may be a harbinger for chronic vaginal infections.Recurrent urinary tract infections are also a common finding.

Vaginal dryness can improve with the use of vaginal lubricants. If symptoms are severe, your healthcare provider may prescribe the use of topical estrogens to improve the vaginal elasticity and lubrication. These also help with urinary symptoms. Use of oral medications for hormone replacement therapy may be required.
