Overview of Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment procedure designed to increase the chances of conception by placing washed good quality sperm directly into the uterus during the woman's fertile window days. This method aims to bypass any potential barriers to conception and optimize the chances of sperm reaching and fertilizing the egg.

Who Can Use IUI?

IUI is often recommended for couples facing various fertility challenges, including:
Unexplained Infertility: When the cause of infertility cannot be identified through standard diagnostic tests.

Male Factor Infertility: In cases of low sperm count, poor sperm motility, or abnormal sperm shape and/or structure (morphology).

Cervical Factor Infertility: If there are issues with the cervix, such as cervical mucus abnormalities, that hinder sperm from reaching the uterus.

Donor Sperm: Couples utilizing healthy donor sperm for conception, wherein infertility was found in the husband.

IUI Treatment Cycle: Step-by-Step Guide

Initial Consultation: Before your consultation with a fertility specialist starts, you need to submit previous reports of your medical history. Based on it, during the appointment, required diagnostic tests, and potential treatment options, like IUI, are discussed.

Ovulation Monitoring:Before starting an IUI cycle, ovulation is closely monitored to determine the optimal timing for insemination. This may involve tracking menstrual cycles, hormone levels, and/or ultrasound monitoring of follicle development.

Semen Preparation: On the day of insemination, the male partner provides a semen sample, which is then processed in the laboratory to isolate high-quality sperm. This preparation removes seminal fluid and non-motile sperm, concentrating the sample for insemination.

Insemination Procedure:Once the sperm sample is prepared, the insemination procedure takes place. A thin, flexible catheter is inserted through the cervix into the uterine cavity, and the prepared sperm is gently released. This process is relatively quick and painless, like a Pap smear.

Post-Insemination Care:Following the procedure, patients may rest for a short period before resuming normal activities. There are typically no restrictions on daily activities, although some healthcare providers may recommend avoiding strenuous exercise or sexual intercourse for a brief period.
